💄 Oil + pigmentHow to remove mascara & eyeliner stains

Wax & oil + black pigment · dissolve with remover first

Mascara and eyeliner are cosmetics made by mixing black pigment into wax and oil. Black smudges on pillowcases, towels or shirt collars spread into wide gray patches if you rub them with water. The more waterproof the product, the less water and detergent alone will loosen it.

🔬 Why this order works

It's the wax and oil that hold the pigment in place, so the oil has to be dissolved first for the pigment to come away. So treat it in this order: dissolve with eye makeup remover or cleansing oil, wash that oil out with dish soap, then launder.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

👕 By fabric

⚪ White cotton & linen

Remover and dish soap remove most of it. If a grayish tinge remains, soak in oxygen bleach solution and wash again.

🎨 Colors & synthetics

Cleansing oil can leave an oil mark on some fabrics, so test on the inside. For any black that remains, test rubbing alcohol and then try dabbing with it.

🧶 Wool, silk & cashmere

Oil spreads easily on silk and wool, so don't treat them at home; take them to a dry cleaner and tell them it's eye makeup.

🚫 Don't

  • Rubbing with a wet tissue — the black pigment spreads widely.
  • Letting it dry without rinsing out the remover's oil — it leaves a new oil mark.
  • Putting it in the dryer while a stain remains.

⏳ If it has already dried

For old black marks, apply cleansing oil and leave for about 10 minutes to dissolve the hardened wax, then loosen it with dish soap and wash. If it doesn't come out in one go, repeat; for white items, finish with oxygen bleach.

💡 Tip

Going to sleep without fully removing your eye makeup easily leaves black marks on the pillowcase. Pre-treat a stained pillowcase with dish soap before mixing it in with other laundry.

❓ Common questions

What about mascara smeared widely over a pillowcase?

Spread cleansing oil over the whole stain and tap it in with your fingers, then loosen the oil with dish soap and wash. For a cotton pillowcase, finish with oxygen bleach.

Is waterproof mascara harder?

It's made to resist water, so water and detergent alone barely touch it. That's why the step of dissolving it first with eye makeup remover is essential.

I dropped eyeshadow powder on my clothes.

Don't rub the shimmer and powder; brush it off or lift it off with tape. Then treat only the remaining color in the same order.
